"The secret of good teaching is to regard the child's intelligence as a fertile field in which seeds may be sown, To grow under the heat of flaming imagination."
- Maria Montessori
Montessori School of Shanghai
The Montessori School of Shanghai (MSS) opened in 2004, dedicated to offering the highest quality Montessori education from infancy through early childhood based on the principles of the Montessori method.
MSS is located on 4 beautiful campuses and is the only Montessori school in Shanghai accredited by the American Montessori Society (AMS) and the Middle States Association for Elementary and Secondary Schools.
The Montessori method fosters progressive, self-motivated growth in all areas of child development—cognitive, emotional, social, and physical. This is the framework of the curriculum offered in multi-age bilingual classrooms integrated with the 2nd Reform Chinese curriculum.
Children learn through hands-on activities and experiences, not through rote memorization. The specially trained teachers create engaging environments where children have the freedom to practice, explore and use materials to answer their questions and discover new ones. Montessori education is centered around these core values which guide the framework of learning:
RESPECT AND COOPERATION
The Montessori approach emphasizes the child's natural human spirit and development and creates a bond through respect and cooperation. Children learn self-awareness, self-discipline, as well as kindness, and respect for others. Developing the social and emotional well-being of children is just as important as intellectual and academic development.
Multi-age classrooms allow children to explore, practice, and master skills at their own pace in language, sensorial, practical life, geography, science, and mathematics. Multi-age groups foster leadership, team building, as well as academic, emotional, and social skills. Children learn individually as well as in group learning environments led by the older children and the teachers.
CHILD-FRIENDLY CLASSROOM DESIGN
The furniture, activity areas, and fixtures are child-sized and within easy reach and view to engage and accommodate children comfortably.
INDEPENDENCE AND SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING
From birth, children strive towards independence. They want to do things for themselves, and to participate in the world around them. In Montessori classrooms, this natural drive towards independence is fostered through practical, social, and intellectual experiences. Children become active agents in their education, saying, “Help me to do it myself." Montessori teachers assist children in moving to higher levels of independence every day. This assistance supports children to become independent, confident learners through self-directed activities and carefully guided practice.
The diverse MSS community includes teachers and families from Shanghai, regions across Asia, and many other International countries. This diversity enhances the understanding and connections of many cultures.
WONDERS OF NATURE
Each MSS campus boasts beautiful gardens and plants to help children gain an appreciation for the environment. Exploring nature provides opportunities for sensorial experiences, a key feature of Montessori education that supports the whole child— mind, body, and soul.
Raising self-reliant, competent, and happy children requires a strong supportive relationship between parents and teachers. Parent education workshops, discussions, and individual conferences help parents understand the developmental stages and key activities that develop independence, social awareness, and connections between home and school.
